Technological progress

Science is a series of theoretical concepts that people can accept or not accept, and will not affect people's lives to a large extent, but it is another way in terms of technology, because technology has a greater impact on people.

The Ferdinand Braun Institute in Berlin, the Leibniz Institute for High Frequency Technology (FBH) in Berlin and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) are strengthening cooperation in the field of high-frequency semiconductor research.

The "Joint Laboratory Inp Equipment" has been launched in 2019 and has now been officially established. The partners are working together on new semiconductor structures and components for terahertz applications, and developing integrated components for electronic terahertz technology.

The Joint Lab bundled previous activities.

These applications include non-destructive material testing, high-resolution medical imaging, and broadband communication systems. The newly created joint laboratory combines Dr. Dr. ’s previous application-related activities. Hady Yacoub instructed FBH's "Inp Equipment Laboratory" to carry out the basic research work of UDE.

The university is responsible for coordinating the joint laboratory of Professor Nils Weimann, who is responsible for high-frequency electronic components. The new "Joint Laboratory Inp Device" has access to the complementary infrastructure of FBH and UDE's semiconductor technology and Optoelectronics Center (ZHO), and therefore aims to implement basic material research in application circuits and modules.

The
study of indium phosphide MMIC The semiconductor material indium phosphide (Inp) is very important for high frequency applications and plays a special role here. Using Inp-based MMICs (monolithic microwave integrated circuits), the highest frequency in the terahertz band can be reached-only available in laboratory-scale situations-so that the new system can be implemented cost-effectively.

As part of the German government's high-tech strategy, FBH's Inp processing technology is currently being significantly expanded in Germany's microelectronics research plant. In ZHO, the crystal growth of the Inp semiconductor layer was updated through an investment in the ForLab program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

In addition, the Government of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Union funded the Terahertz Integration Center with ERDF funds on ZHO to study the concept of the integration of module modules in terahertz.
